Part of being in JC // JC has officially ended

Hey ;)
Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

Been busy occupying myself with alot of stuff after getting my results so I didn't have time to blog, so this is what I've been thinking for the past week.

Ever since graduating from RJ in the 2014 batch, I've had so much more time to reflect on the past few hectic years of my life. As a JAE student from a neighbourhood school, entering an elite school meant being introduced into another world. I still remember the culture shock in the first few weeks/months being in the school.

Before I entered RJ, like most people, I felt that RJ students are cocky, elitist, geniuses, and all rounders. (Some of it's still true though) I'm actually quite sure that every school has their fair share of such people, just that in RJ, you'll see abit more.

I didn't really like the elitist atmosphere in school, and the stigma that everyone have towards RJ students can never be applicable to that small minority. For people like me, I studied really hard for O Levels to do well, and since I've got the grades, and RJ was closest to my house, why not? But actually, studying that hard for Os might not be enough for JC. Only a teeny weeny bit of skills learnt in Os are actually applicable in JC, while IP students have already been prepared these skills since secondary school. Really, I just don't get why must the content learnt in Os be slightly different from As. -.-

Plus, the distinction between JAE and IP students are actually quite distinct, while in most other JCs, everyone enter as an O level student. My friends from other schools even asked me what's JAE students LOL. Still, I was blessed to be able to mix in well with everyone and even made tons of really close friends <3

Throughout my 2 years in JC, I've been struggling through every single subject and flunking at least 2 subjects for every exam, even barely missing the meet-the-parents session for those who failed 3 subjects. And my passes are not that good either: 45/100 is a pass in JC, which sometimes I get 43.5 rounded to 44, plus school's moderation which bumps me up to an E grade (aka fail -> pass)

Especially when people around you studied too, and they get straight As, or Bs. So the only way to comfort myself would be to convince myself that I didn't study very hard at all. And make it seem like I really slacked alot, so that I won't feel so bad about myself. But deep down, I knew I really tried, and that lingering feeling of disappointment snowballed on to the next exam.

During the As period, I realised how much I actually hated studying. I never knew I hated studying this much, but A levels proved me wrong. The tension in school, with everyone mugging so hard for the last, final, major exam, was immense. Most of my friends liked studying in school, which I hated, so usually I'll study alone or with my other friends outside of school. But it was the loneliest period of my life, and I felt so out of everything from time to time. Naturally when you're alone with stress hitting in, you'll think of suicide. But of course I won't be so stupid to do such things. Thinking back, I will never study alone unless it's desperate. Maybe next time, all these experiences would be dear to me.

Still, everyone was so supportive of one another be it in class, in volleyball and even in the OG group. :) Anything you don't know? Ask the group. No one knows? Ask the teacher, then tell the group. AHAHAH It's all a cycle and everyone learns together, which was really heartening :)

Everyone was also counting on the bell curve, which I did, too. But no matter how much I knew the bell curve was the most unfair judgement in history, it would be very useful, but only for those above the bell curve, which is similar to stepping on others to get the grades you want. Hearing people going "It's ok there's the bell curve. At least there are students from neighbourhood schools to fill up the bottom of the bell curve." was the most sickening thing I've heard. Seriously. I have so many friends from schools that are considered 'average' but they are still smart.

And reality sets in when you know the school's reputation gives you 'higher priorities'. Especially when getting part time tuition jobs. The practicality mindset of people sets in when parents asks which school you're from, and saying you're from XX JC (as long as it's a school that's seemingly elitist) they'll be glad to have you teaching their child.

On results day, most students would be aiming for their straight As, or maybe 4As and 1B. Or maybe 3As and 2 Bs. Anything worse than that, they'll be disappointed. I don't deny that I wished for another miracle, from Es to As. And though I didn't get the grades most students in RJ would get, I was actually fine with it. Getting ABBC/C was actually quite good IMO. But probably because of the atmosphere, that hidden expectation deep down inside, and the kinds of grades others get, you'll unknowingly compare yourself with others and start to feel horrible. And at that point, nothing could help.

"Grades don't define you"

"It's not bad already what"

There's really nothing a straight As student can say to someone who didn't do as well but to let time help. I was genuinely happy for those who did really well. But really, I think it's because from young we've been taught to compare, either to make yourself feel better or to be motivated to work harder, which really sucks. Comparing with friends from the same school, comparing with friends from different schools, comparing with anything and everything--it made me feel even worse. But it wasn't to the extent that I thought I'll be affected by it. As the comparisons went on, later in the day, I became MAJORLY AFFECTED.

And so I went cycling in the evening to clear my mind and stop myself from comparing. I knew I couldn't lie to myself about how shitty I felt, especially when people started asking how were my results. I didn't even know what to reply. So my answer just became "ok la not so good and not so bad" which I'm quite sure most people assumed (since I was from RJ), its like maybe As with 1 or 2 Bs.

The next few days were basically just shitty. I spent my time with a few friends gymming my body out (does that even make sense LOL) and avoiding mostly everyone else for fear of talking about results. Really, I've actually already set what I wanted to take in uni already, but maybe the hidden disappointment just surfaced from some corner. Everytime I stopped to think about stuff, it all redirects to results which ruins my mood again and I have to preoccupy myself with something to stop myself from thinking.

Time really helps, especially in my case where disappointment just came by and caught me unprepared.

I'm well past that stage now (I hope), and it's just time to move on. 20 years down the road, who would give a shit about your grades anyway? And I wouldn't want myself to get into a uni course 'just cause my grades can make it' again. This time I would do something in my own capacity, and something which I would be able to like together with what I would want to do in the future.

It's the period of uni applications now, I'm really excited for uni. I miss school, (minus the studying), I miss meeting people and getting sick of them, and I miss being in the company of everyone. I won't know what I school I'll go, or what course I'll get into, but I feel so much better now, with one worry off my mind.

But I really hope that everyone enters the course they genuinely want, and not 'just cause their grades can make it'. Especially if they know that that is the path they are heading :)

Nevertheless, I'm really grateful to everyone who supported me when I was at my worst and horrible times throughout JC and being there to enjoy the fun times together; Never would I trade these memories with anything in the world <3

CNY eve // Florist [Last Day] // First Lou Hei of 2015 // Reunion Dinner

Today's my last day working in a secret garden, and I can't help but feel really sad :( Well usually I wouldn't be sad to end a job, but this time, working at the shop was like a wonderland, a secret garden that no one can intrude except for like-minded people. Even though I worked for only 2 weeks, I've already met so many new friends and exposed to so many different groups of people! AND the main thing is
I'VE FOUND MY LOVE FOR FLOWERS

How cool is that?!?! Ok, maybe cause I haven't been exposed to flowers very often since young, and even on the first day I worked, I couldn't appreciate anything. But as time passed by, I slowly began to realise how therapeutic flowers are, and how lucky I am to have been able to work in this secret garden. Chris and Carolyn are also real awesome, and their view on life is also very inspiring :)))

So for the last day of work, I learnt how to make something that's for funerals:

It's really amateur-ish since it was a mad rush and Chris couldn't make it himself. Actually he was supposed to help save/improve my lousy work but the delivery guy came and we had to send it off in it's horrible state. But OHWELL, at least I've learnt my lesson on how to make it better!! :))

Got Malay rice for lunch today!!

[caption id="attachment_1073" align="aligncenter" width="660"]IMG_0736 ALOT OF RICE but DELICIOUS and spicy!!![/caption]

Chris also gave me flowers (actually maybe cause it will die if left in the shop for too long since it'll be closed during CNY), but still, they were GORGEOUS. Really couldn't contain my excitement HAHAHA. And adding on to the red alstroemerias which I got the day before, I have TONS of flowers at home <3

Bought yellow tulips from him too, (luckily he made me pay cause I feel really bad without paying them), and he gave me this SUPER DUPER CRAZY DISCOUNT HAHA. And he just gave me all 10 stalks too <3

Another highlight of the day ;)) IT'S CNY EVE WHICH MEANS REUNION DINNER!!! Went to hihao's house for dinner with my other cousins, which is SO FUN. Finally I got to lou hei this year!! :))) Always love lou hei since we can shout random stuff and just go crazy for a moment, and then just picking out the crackers and abalone to eat!

Dinner afterwards was like potluck, with penzai, and lorbak, and duck meat, and cold scallops all handmade by the fine older ladies ;) Doesn't sound alot, but when you actually eat it, the penzai already has SO MUCH ingredients we can't even finish our food!! And there was the saga of preventing flies from flying into the soup/drinks cause of the light's reflection. HAHAHAHA.

Determination // Inspiration // Admitting

hey ;)

[caption id="attachment_1013" align="aligncenter" width="660"]IMG_0442 can you see the stars?[/caption]

So ONE HELL OF A COINCIDENCE and met the same running guy while running at night again, just that I was ending alr and he was starting. Actually I forgot his name oops starts with F I think!! Anyway, started chatting with him breathlessly since I didn't have any breath left about random stuff.

Actually he's been running for over a year now, and even though he doesn't look fit, he has been running >5km everyday. AND he has already lost more than 50kg just by running. DO YOU SEE THAT DETERMINATION??? That is CRAZY. He said
Just don't give up and persevere, you'll definitely see results

Which I totally agree. I don't even have the determination to run everyday since I am so busy with random stuff, (but I don't count myself busy meeting with my friends ;) ) and I'm just totally inspired by his determination!!

Started talking about studies and what I wanted to take in the future (which I don't even want to think about right now but seems like it's a topic that everyone likes so ohwell) and actually I already know what I want. It's just the grades. I am quite sure my grades won't be able to make it to the course I want which is why I have so many back up plans and trying to detach myself from my inclination to the course to reduce impact. (KIDDING) [reduce devastation] LOL. But as long as I don't think about it too much it'll be really easy for me to receive grades I have already prepared myself for!!! ;))

Anyway, he was really positive and kept saying "You should be more optimistic!!!" "Things will turn out fine in the end!!!" "Always look at the bright side!!!"

Quite sure I'm a super optimistic person but I can't handle devastation that well so being less optimistic from time to time helps ;))

But seriously, he was a super inspiring person!!! I even ran another 1km with him after I'm done LOL WOWZIES.

Deep musing sux I really hate it why think about life why know stuff why admit your emotions when you're better off being oblivious to them??? So I will not admit to such horrible emotions because I will not allow myself to have them!!!

DETERMINED xx

Ok anyway everyone else worrying about anything stay strong!!! It's all going to be over soon :))))

Luv, Olliee

Florist // Hobby // Birthday celebration!

hey;))

BEEN SO BUSYYYY!!! Anyway, finally started work as a florist!! Ok errr actually I'm just doing till the end of Feb since they want commitment which I can't provide and I feel bad :((( The pay isn't that good IMO since I have to travel all the way to Orchard too, so I'll just quit.

Floral Obsession* @ Scotts Square by K+

^ Floral Obsession is a pop up curatorial florist store in Scotts Square by K+, which is this company that provides a curatorial space for artists to showcase their works and sell them. PERFECT FOR ARTSY PEOPLE. Chris (the florist) is  A FREAKING TALENTED FLORIST I'M NOT EVEN KIDDING!! He didn't even go for flower arrangement classes and did everything based on his instincts. PLUS flower arrangement is his hobby, so basically he's making a living out of his hobby. SO JEALOUS!!!

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Anyway, worked for 2 days there, and that place is ATAS. Been washing the vases and learning abit of admin stuff like Excel (been forever since I've touched excel)! But on day 2 I actually watched someone doing a flower arrangement for the first time in my life! I feel super privileged!! Somemore it's by some talented guy ;))

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Watching him arrange flowers makes me feel so happy. The way he thinks about how to design the arrangement, the way he uses his imagination to think of creative ways to use different types of flowers intrigues me. (And since I don't really have alot of stuff to do), I've been thinking if I will ever be so devoted to something in my life. Even though I can't really appreciate those arrangements (I am not artsy), but everything has his mind and soul to it and you can even guess what music he's listening to when arranging them. But, the arrangements are GORGEOUS. Legit.

[caption id="attachment_996" align="aligncenter" width="660"]Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset watched this from start to finish![/caption]

And I didn't even know there were so many people interested in flowers/arrangements!!! Maybe cause I've never been exposed to flowers (and the flowers are REAL EX) so I can't appreciate it \'_'/

[caption id="attachment_1003" align="aligncenter" width="660"]Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset PRETTY RIGHT???[/caption]

But yea and it made me think of stuff even more. What you study in university does not actually determine your career. Working hard for what you actually like determines your career. WOWZIES so chim!!! Learnt all these chim stuff in 2 days in a flower shop clearly I've been tamed (ok kidding) HAHAHAHA.

SO INSPIRED!!! <3

[caption id="attachment_1000" align="aligncenter" width="660"]Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset met a new friend from upstairs HAHA[/caption]

[caption id="attachment_995" align="aligncenter" width="660"]Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset and I got a flower which he wanted to throw away :))[/caption]

And he's damn nice?!?! Like the people working there are legit nice people. He bought me lunch for both days!! The kuay teow he bought WAS FREAKING GOOD. After heating up HAAHA.

[caption id="attachment_993" align="aligncenter" width="660"]Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset I was DROOLING while waiting for this ._.[/caption]

OHOH and on the 3rd level is another store by K+, which showcases art by talented artists, but it changes often! This time it's by Keng Lye, who used resin and acrylic to make SUPER LOOK-LIKE REAL artworks!! Kinda scary how it actually looks like a real fish trapped inside!!! The art works are usually DAMN EXPENSIVE, which I wouldn't afford but there are actually people buying them!! (clearly I'm being introduced to the atas world which I cannot afford T.T)

[caption id="attachment_999" align="aligncenter" width="660"]Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset one of Keng Lye's artworks![/caption]

Random stuff ;)

Had a mini birthday celebration for Jan/Feb babies in MBS!! And the first friend I met there's gonna have her birthday soon so HAPPY EARLY BIRTHDAY!!

20 Things I Learnt the Year I Turned 18

heyy ;))

Got inspired to write this post after reading Maii Sabilano's "20 things I learned the year I turned 18", and wanted to do my own take of what I learnt the year I turned 18 ;) You can read her's here!!

1. Grades do not define who you are. This is most important thing I've learnt this year, since I've just finished my GCE A levels. Studying for it was mad. I've definitely failed many subjects in school. There were times I tried giving up. There were times I cried. There were times I was so depressed I even had suicidal thoughts. There were times when I felt so alone. But everything ended and I'm out of that phase now. My life is back to normal, and it might have been even better :)

2. Always have a back-up plan. I'm not trying to say you're not good enough for anything. It's just life has this annoying way of thrashing your plans and ruining them. Always be flexible and keep an open mind. Just cause you can't do what you want doesn't mean your life would be ruined. It actually makes you stronger.

Unknown

3. Being 18 means you are legal for MANY THINGS. M18 movies. Blood donation without parental consent. Clubbing. Purchasing of alcoholic drinks.

4. But this also makes you even more responsible for yourself. Overnight, you would have just turned from an 'underage teenager' to a 'legal teenager'. Still a teenager. THANK GOD. Clearly you can get away with many things without parental consent, but you still have to maintain, BRAH.

5. Never compare yourself with others. We are all made differently and that's what makes you special. "You are born an original, don't die a copy."

6. Looks actually do matter. I'm not even joking. You can deny whatsoever but it's just true. Everyone's materialistic. But looks are also subjective. For the record, I don't think anyone's ugly ;)

7. Character and attitude 'changes' people's physical appearances. You can be gorgeous but if you have an ugly heart, you're basically just plain ugly. You can be normal looking but if you have a huge heart, you're GORGEOUS.

8. Be truthful. Being honest might actually make some people hate you, but you can prevent awkwardness by being truthful. You can actually be even closer to your friends just by being honest :) If you don't look good in that dress, YOU DON'T.

9. Inform. Growing up in a strict environment (I can't really say it's strict, but I guess my parents will be unhappy if I stay out after 10pm last time), I've actually learnt that satisfying what your parents want from you allows you to do more. As long as I tell them I'll be back late/having a sleepover/going out, they're fine with it. Also maybe I'm 18.

10. Spend time with your family. That's what I've been neglecting since young, as I didn't really like to be associated with my family in the past. (mean but that's true) JIO your mum/dad/bro to a one-to-one lunch/dinner session. It really improves your bond, and you might not have to pay for the meal hehe ;))

11. Being awkward is something you feel. If you keep in mind you're not awkward, you're not. I rely on people's company but sometimes it's still awkward to make new friends. One important thing I've learnt is: just overcome your awkwardness. Push it to the back of your head and be nice :)

12. Accept your gender. Since young I've been constantly told that I should have been a guy but before I came out Heaven decided to change me into a girl instead, BUT WHO GIVES A FUCK.Girl, guy, whatever. Being a girl has it's merits too. It's like you can do everything.

13. Learn to wear a dress/skirt. This is like the ANOTHER SUPER IMPORTANT THING I'VE LEARNT. The last time I willingly wore a dress was for Sec 4 prom, but this year I wore a dress for my cousin's wedding, and for JC prom, and club. I've always felt dresses wasn't for me, and I rarely attend parties in the past, so there wasn't a need. But guess I need to learn now!

14. Also learn make-up. It's the most important thing a girl ever needs. And eye makeup is the most important, following concealers. LOL. Ever since I did my own make up for prom it was so much fun I got a little addicted ... ._.

15. Always have different types of clothes in your closet. It's good for emergencies.

16. Clubbing is fun. ok I sound like some mad clubber but I only went there a few times, and I really love the environment - the music, dance, people, drinks, everything.

17. Friends do care. Love from all my friends <3

18. Don't be judgemental. And don't bother about judgemental people. Do what you like and don't give a shit about  how others think about you.

19. Get advice from older people, you don't have to heed them, but just keep it in mind.

20. HAVE FUN. Just, do what you love and GO ALL OUT AND HAVE FUN.

[caption id="attachment_520" align="aligncenter" width="225"]IMG_9004 So what have you learnt?[/caption]
